Altered Narratives

April 14 – May 17, 2026
Reception: Sunday, April 19th from 3:00 – 5:00 (Location: Starlight Room)

The Alternative Photographic Arts Group (APAG), a subgroup of the New Jersey Photography Forum founded by Nancy Ori and Heidi Sussman presents Altered Narratives, an exhibition that challenges traditional definitions of photography and expands its creative boundaries.

Held in the Starlight Gallery at the Mayo Performing Arts Center, 100 South Street,Morristown, NJ, the show will be on view from April 12-May 17, 2026.  An opening reception and artists’ talk will be held on Sunday, April 19 from 3-5 pm. This free event is open to the public.

Participating artists include Theresa Hood, Carolyn Kleinman, Kathleen Nademus, Dorothy Kuehn, Nancy Ori, James Provenzano, Heidi Sussman and Hayata Takeshita.

For more than a year, APAG artists have met monthly, cultivating a dynamic environment for experimentation and innovation. The works in Altered Narratives reflect this spirit. Each piece begins with or is inspired by a photograph yet moves far beyond the captured image. Here, the photograph is not the final destination, but a point of departure. This imaginative and innovative exhibition invites viewers to reconsider what a photograph can be; not a fixed record of a moment, but a living surface shaped by process, time, and transformation.

Through hands-on, intuitive processes, photographic imagery is transferred, layered, partially erased, and embedded into richly textured surfaces. Artists employ a range of approaches including image transfer, collage, encaustics, pinhole photography, mixed media techniques, cyanotypes and other historic photographic processes. As images are physically transformed, they loosen from their original context, opening space for narratives that feel fluid, evolving, and open to interpretation.

“Photographs in this exhibition function as catalysts,” says co-founder and curator Heidi Sussman. “They spark the work, but do not contain it. The resulting pieces invite viewers into a space where memory, material, and imagination intersect.”

The New Jersey Photography Forum, directed by Nancy Ori for over 30 years, is one of the state’s most established organizations dedicated to fine art photography. APAG was formed to explore photography’s boundless possibilities while remaining grounded in its rich history.
