The Mayo Performing Arts Center is thrilled to continue our Music Student of the Month (MSOM) program. This student recognition program was recognized as “outstanding” by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and has honored hundreds of students over the last twenty years.

MPAC’s Music Student of the Month program honors Morris County middle and high school students nominated by their music teacher, not only for their excellence as musicians but for the dedication, leadership, and commitment to their entire school community. Each month teachers are asked to nominate an outstanding musician in a particular category including, Jazz Musicians, Brass Players, Wind Players, Percussionists, Guitarists, Pianists, Orchestra Members, Band Members etc. Students are honored before a chosen performance where they receive recognition on stage and complimentary tickets to that evening’s show.

All students who are honored throughout the course of the MSOM season will have the opportunity to participate in a recital on stage at MPAC. Press releases and pictures of the award recipients are also sent out to local papers monthly.

About the Music Students of the Month (bio supplied their instructors.)

Emma DelGuidice

Grade 8; Pequannock Valley School; Nominated by Michael Kertez

Emma is an exceptional student and highly deserving of the Outstanding Jazz Musician of the Month Award. She consistently demonstrates a remarkable level of musicianship across multiple instruments, excelling on guitar, trombone, and percussion. Her versatility allows her to contribute meaningfully in a variety of ensemble settings, and she approaches each instrument with both technical skill and deep musical understanding.  Emma is an active and impactful member of our Jazz Band, Marching Band, and Concert Band programs. In Jazz Band, she brings energy, stylistic awareness, and strong improvisational instincts, whether performing on guitar or supporting the ensemble rhythmically. In the Marching Band, her commitment, focus, and adaptability stand out as she contributes to both the musical and visual demands of the ensemble. In Concert Band, she demonstrates a high level of musicality and attention to detail, consistently striving for excellence and helping to elevate the overall sound of the group.

Beyond her impressive abilities as a performer, Emma is a natural leader within the ensemble. She is always willing to step up when needed—whether that means helping her peers during rehearsals, setting a positive example through her preparation and focus, or taking on additional responsibilities to support the group’s success. Her leadership is not only evident in what she does, but in how she does it—with humility, consistency, and genuine care for those around her.  Emma’s kind, respectful, and helpful demeanor makes her an invaluable member of the band community. She fosters a positive and inclusive environment, encouraging others and contributing to a culture of collaboration and growth. Her peers look up to her not only as a talented musician, but as someone who embodies the best qualities of a team member and leader.

Marielle Eklund

Grade 7, Randolph Middle School; Nominated by Tom Davidson

Marielle Eklund is a jazz trumpeter who looks to inspire her peers through dedication to her craft, a humble nature, and a genuine love of jazz. As a 7th grader, she is a two-year lead trumpet player in the Randolph Middle School Jazz Ensemble who sets an example by always showing up for rehearsal on time ready to work with a positive attitude. This year, her daily preparation and practicing earned her a spot in the North Jersey Junior Region Jazz Band in which she was a strong section player and soloist. In addition, she participates weekly in the Jazz House Kids Sunday Academy in Montclair, NJ, performing in both an Ambassadors Combo and the Dynasty Big Band. With the Dynasty Big Band, Marielle had the honor of competing at the 2026 Charles Mingus Competition & Festival and the Livingston High School Jazz Festival. For the past two years, Marielle has attended Jazz House Kids Summer Workshop, where her creativity and improvisation skills shined through performances with the Latin Jazz Ensemble and her combos. For the last three years, Marielle has also participated in the annual Chica Power spring residency, which focuses on empowering girls in jazz. Marielle was a member of the very first Chica Power Big Band, and even recruited girls from her home town of Randolph to join the Chica Power program to expand their jazz experiences.  Marielle is also an active participant in other musical areas at Randolph Middle School, including singing in the choir, playing violin in the orchestra, and performing on stage in their annual musical performances. She has been part of the honor roll every marking period and participates in art and book clubs. Marielle rounds out her activities through being involved in multiple sports throughout the year, including soccer, softball, and track, and her passion for music combined with her incredible work ethic truly embodies the spirit of a Music Student of the Month.

His positive and curious attitude is contagious.

Harrison is an aspiring bass trombonist and was recently accepted to participate with the North Jersey Region 1 Jazz Ensemble.  He is actively engaged with several programs available at Mount Olive HS including marching band, wind ensemble, jazz ensemble, and rock and roll academy.  In addition, he has participated with the summer arts jazz institute at Mason Gross School of the Arts.   Lastly,  he is an outstanding citizen of our school and has a lot of respect for LCJO.

Max Wolf

Grade 12; Morris Hills High School; Nominated by Richard Hartsuiker

Max is an outstanding student and citizen of Morris Hills High School, and he is a very dedicated and concerned individual who is most thorough in all his efforts. Max has been involved in numerous aspects of the Morris Hills music program throughout high school. He is a principal percussionist in our concert band program, a dedicated member of our marching band for five years (where he currently serves as one of the percussion section leaders), and is a member of our jazz band, where he has often been featured as a soloist throughout high school.  Max has an incredibly diligent work ethic and is both motivated and driven to succeed.  He is task-oriented, organized, and never fails to follow through on assignments.  Max’s commitment and drive have afforded him some unique performing experiences:  he accompanied international trumpet soloist Jose Sibaja in a performance with our bands of Flight of the Green Hornet, performed a rousing and extended solo at a recent jazz concert of Coconut Champagne, was a featured drumset soloist at our schools Gifted and Talented Showcase, AND I asked him to accompany me as part of a dixieland band (made up of all professional musicians) on a recital I organized as part of a degree program I was pursuing at Rutgers University!  Simply put, he is a musician of the highest caliber.
