NJ Photography Forum "Colorific" in in Upstairs Gallery

September 9 – October 21, 2025
Reception: Sunday, September 21 at 6:00 to 8:00

New Jersey Photography Forum, celebrating its 30th Anniversary, presents Colorific 2025. This exhibit explores the impact color has in photography, both as a way to enhance what the viewer sees and make an artistic statement through the image. Images in the exhibit will range from realistic pictures to highly manipulated abstracts. All of the images will have originated from a photograph. NJPF is dedicated to helping artists improve their abilities in Fine Art Photography through workshops, critiques and exhibiting work. Members include long term professional photographers and young artists just beginning to explore their photographic potential. The one thing they all have in common is the desire to create exciting and meaningful images using this medium.

The Art Upstairs Gallery is a gift of the John and Margaret Post Foundation.

An Exhibit by Todd Doney

September 9 – October 21, 2025
Reception: Sunday, September 21 at 6:00 to 8:00

Todd was born in Chicago, IL and grew up in the near-north suburbs. He attended the prestigious American Academy of Art in Chicago where he was awarded the Union League Scholarship Award. After graduating, Todd immediately started his career as an illustrator. He worked as an illustrator until 2006; the year he started his gallery work.

Todd’s gallery work includes one person shows at the Morris Museum in Morristown, NJ, Broadfoot & Broadfoot Gallery, NY, NY, & Boonton, NJ, Morris Arts, Morristown, NJ, and The College of Saint Elizabeth, Morristown, NJ, among others. His paintings have also been exhibited at Drumthwacket, the Governor’s official residence, in Princeton, NJ, The Paterson Museum in Paterson, NJ, The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, The Arts for the Parks National Competition in Wyoming, and the Society of Illustrators Annual Exhibitions in New York, to name a few. Todd’s work is being represented by Broadfoot & Broadfoot located in Boonton, NJ.

Currently, he is a professor of art at the County College of Morris in Randolph, NJ, where he teaches drawing, painting, and foundation classes.  Todd lives with his family in Gillette, New Jersey. His home is situated adjacent to the Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge, which is an inspiration for much of his work.

Artists Statement:

Nature has been a vehicle of artists throughout the ages to express themselves and it is the impetus of my work as well. To be more precise, the nature that has inspired the majority of my work is the Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge which is situated adjacent to my home. Many of the images that form my work are inspired by hikes, dog walks, bike rides, and drives through the swamp. In fact, my daily route to work goes directly through the swamp (I teach art County College of Morris) and I have pulled my car over to the shoulder many times in order to photograph a sunrise or sunset that may find its way as subject matter for a future painting. In recent years, I have expanded my subject area to include Jockey Hollow – Morristown National Historical Park, Lewis Morris Park, and parks along the Passaic and Raritan rivers.

My paintings are an attempt to freeze in time nature’s ephemeral flux. Nature is fleeting and constantly changing. Not only seasonally and daily, but even hourly. Greek philosopher Heraclitus wrote, “All things are flowing” and “You cannot step into the same river twice….” Consequently, if you were to view the scene that inspired one of my paintings today, it would look quite different from the day that I observed the scene about a year ago. The subject matter depicted in my images…the colors of the sky, the ripples of the water, and the shapes of foliage…exist only in my painting now.
