Born in Uppsala, Sweden, Mattias is internationally recognized for vividly describing and portraying animals and plants in their natural and cultural settings. His artistry has rendered him success both in the world of documentaries and in the art scene.
Mattias has documented wild places in Borneo, Malaysia, India, Nigeria, Brazil, Costa Rica, Guyana, Thailand, South Africa, China, Iceland, Galapagos, Ecuador, Botswana, Panama, Mongolia, Peru, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Hawaii, and Antarctica. His work in Borneo has brought to the world’s attention the critical loss of biodiversity resulting from the thoughtless proliferation of palm oil plantations.
Mattias has developed 13 cover stories for National Geographic magazine. His photographs have been shown in renowned museums and galleries globally and at major worldwide events such as the UN Climate Change Conference. The King of Sweden honored Mattias with its Medal of the 8th Grade. The World Economic Forum named him a Young Global Leader. He serves on the Board of Trustees of WWF Sweden and is a Fellow of The National Geographic Society, Stockholm Resilience Centre, and The Linnean Society of London.
A longtime fan favorite on stage, Mattias expertly blends storytelling, humor, and passion to bring the biodiversity crisis front and center, encouraging audiences to step up in ways large and small to protect what remains for the sheer glory and privilege of being a part of the solution.
