The Mayo Performing Arts Center is currently renovating and expanding our main lobby, exterior façade and plaza area in order to meet the needs of our growing patronage and make upgrades that are essential to accessibility, usability, safety and efficiency of our 75 year old building. Components of the Main Lobby Building Project include:
- Expanded lobby
- New and enlarged box office
- New and expanded main lobby men’s and ladies restrooms
- An elevator to the second floor balcony lobby
- New electronic marquee
- Renovated exterior walkway to the Starlight Room
- Basement storage
- Updated and upgraded concessions and signage
Why are you renovating the front of house?
This is the final phase of renovations in the original Master Plan for expanding and renovating the theatre facility. As we have updated and upgraded our stage, our production facilities and our upstairs balcony, it is now time to turn attention to the main lobby and front of the building. When completed, the front of the theatre will have a new and dynamic look that will enhance the patron experience while still retaining the classic charm of our original design.
How will the look of the building change?
We will retain and restore the four columns in the front of the building that have been part of the Theatre since it opened in 1937. The two front sides of the building (where the poster cases are) will be expanded closer to the street to accommodate expanded interior facilities. The marquee will stay in the same space but will be electronic and raised higher. The exterior plaza will be redone. As you face the building, the right side will be slightly expanded toward the Vail parking lot to accommodate restrooms and the elevator.
What is the timeline on this project?
Construction begins in July 2012 and we expect the entire project to be completed in about a year.
How many additional restrooms will be added?
The Women’s room will have 12 stalls (it currently has 3); the men’s room will have 6 urinals and 4 stalls (it currently has 3 urinals and 1 stall). The Men’s and Women’s restrooms locations will be swapped to line up with the facilities on the second floor. Each bathroom will also meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Why are you adding an elevator?
We are very pleased to add an elevator to the second floor. Our new elevator will allow access to the Art Upstairs Gallery and put us in compliance with ADA requirements.
How much will it cost?
The lobby renovation will cost approx $1.5 million dollars.
How will you pay for the expansion?
The renovation is being funded out of the theatre’s capital improvements budget and in part by new funds currently being raised.
Will construction affect any performances?
No work will be done while performances are going on stage. We are endeavoring to have minimal impact during our season. We will let our patrons know of any inconveniences that may arise in advance and we hope that they will be patient in these situations.
Will the Box Office be open during construction?
The Box Office will remain open during construction. However, there may be some days in which walk-up windows may be closed during the day based on construction. Information will be posted should those occurrences arise.
